The pink-tinted sand and shallow turquoise lagoon of Elafonissi
Elafonissi, Crete, Greece Open in Google Maps

Elafonissi sits at Crete's remote south-western tip, about 75km (1.5–2 hours' drive) from Chania, the nearest airport.

At Crete's remote south-western tip, where the road runs out through the Topolia gorge, Elafonissi's lagoon is barely knee-deep and tinted pink by billions of crushed shell fragments — shallow enough to wade to the islet opposite. It's protected, justly famous and busy by mid-morning, so most visitors treat it as an early-start day trip from Chania, Paleochora or Kissamos rather than somewhere to base themselves.

When to go

Getting around

Car hire — the practical way in

With one bus a day and taxis charging for a long round trip, most visitors hire a car in Chania. Every major desk is in the airport arrivals hall, alongside local operators worth comparing:

The one daily bus

KTEL Chania runs a single summer-season service each way — out from Chania mid-morning, back mid-afternoon. It's seasonal (roughly May–October) and the timetable shifts year to year, so check before you rely on it:

  • KTEL ChaniaOne daily service each way in season — verify the current timetable and fare

Taxis & transfers

Pre-booked taxis and transfer companies run the same route from Chania town or the airport. It's a long fare for a long drive, so agree the price with the operator before you set off rather than assume a meter rate:

Summer boat from Paleochora

In season, a tourist excursion boat runs from Paleochora's jetty to Elafonissi, usually stopping at Kedrodasos on the way — a scenic alternative to the drive if you're already based on the south coast:

Every stay is real and bookable — links open the hotel's official site. Elafonissi itself has only a handful of options, so most visitors base themselves in Chania, Paleochora or Kissamos and drive in; where a property's own photos aren't licensed yet, the image shows its area (labelled on the photo).
