Elafonissi sits at Crete's remote south-western tip, about 75km (1.5–2 hours' drive) from Chania, the nearest airport.
At Crete's remote south-western tip, where the road runs out through the Topolia gorge, Elafonissi's lagoon is barely knee-deep and tinted pink by billions of crushed shell fragments — shallow enough to wade to the islet opposite. It's protected, justly famous and busy by mid-morning, so most visitors treat it as an early-start day trip from Chania, Paleochora or Kissamos rather than somewhere to base themselves.

Daytime highs run from about 15°C in January to 32°C in July. Driest June to August; wettest in January, with rain on about 13 days. The sea is warmest in August at around 27°C, coolest at 17°C.

The one daily bus
KTEL Chania runs a single summer-season service each way — out from Chania mid-morning, back mid-afternoon. It's seasonal (roughly May–October) and the timetable shifts year to year, so check before you rely on it:
Taxis & transfers
Pre-booked taxis and transfer companies run the same route from Chania town or the airport. It's a long fare for a long drive, so agree the price with the operator before you set off rather than assume a meter rate:

In season, a tourist excursion boat runs from Paleochora's jetty to Elafonissi, usually stopping at Kedrodasos on the way — a scenic alternative to the drive if you're already based on the south coast:

Things to do
Elafonissi lagoon
A protected, knee-deep lagoon tinted pink by crushed shell fragments, separating the mainland from a small islet opposite.
Wade to the islet
In calm weather the water barely reaches your knees the whole way across to Elafonisi islet, which gives the whole beach its name.
Chrysoskalitissa Monastery
A working 17th-century monastery perched 35 metres above the Libyan Sea, five minutes up the road, named for a legendary golden step.
Kedrodasos beach
A quieter, undeveloped beach a kilometre east, backed by a native juniper grove that grows right down to the sand.
